    What to know about TikTok’s fate in the US

    TikTok’s future in the US has probably never been more in doubt than it is now. Since launching in the US in 2018, the short-form video app has been battling increased scrutiny from US lawmakers about its relationship with its owner, Chinese company ByteDance.

    The ban is partly and largely symbolic as a result of concerns that ByteDance could share TikTok user data with the Chinese government and push confusion or propaganda through its recommendation algorithm. (There is no evidence, at least not publicly, that such sharing ever occurred.) Most recently, the House of Representatives overwhelmingly voted to pass a bill that could eventually be banned The app has a parallel concern that TikTok is dangerous to children and teenagers, a problem with many social media platforms, that Congress has taken up in the past year.     The Biden administration has demanded that TikTok’s Chinese owners, ByteDance, divest or sell their stake in the company. This would take the potential Chinese threat out of the equation entirely – but only if ByteDance and China agreed to it.
