The present – and future – of the American left

    -

The Democratic Party is remarkably united behind Vice President Kamala Harris — a solidarity amid a defeat-Donald-Trump-at-all-costs strategy in an election with profound consequences for the future of American democracy. But the truce is a fragile one that will likely end with the presidential election, whether Harris wins or loses. If Harris becomes president, the party’s progressive and centrist wings will compete to control his agenda. Meanwhile, Harris’ defeat will usher in a period of party-wide soul-searching and intense competition for the best ideological path.

In a new series, Vox explains the current state of the American left: its transformation during the four years of Joe Biden’s presidency, its impending internal debates and ruptures, its power players and electoral shifts, and its radically different trajectory, depending on what happens in November.

The series will include new episodes every day from October 14 to October 18. And please check out our September series: The Present — and Future of the American Right.
