It’s been more than a week since music mogul and rapper Sean “Diddy” Combs was arrested on a litany of federal charges including sex trafficking and racketeering conspiracy, but questions surrounding the allegations have grown in recent days.

Which of Combs’ many celebrity friends heard about the alleged “freak-off”? What, if anything, did his former romantic partners, including Jennifer Lopez, know? If there are tapes, what’s on them? Why do people talk about Justin Bieber?

It’s not a stretch to draw parallels between Combs’ case and that of notorious sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Lots of money, a long list of powerful friends and a culture of celebrity silence make for a potent combination that, as Anna writes, “is made to breed conspiracy theories.” In the wake of the arrest, amateur internet sleuths have released numerous videos and photos and pored over interviews with Diddy and his celebrity associates in search of answers.

Meanwhile, charges against Combs continued to pile up. After several civil lawsuits were filed against Combs late last year, another woman came forward this week to make allegations In the 26-page civil suit That Combs and his bodyguard took her to a recording studio for his record label, Bad Boy, in 2001, repeatedly raped her and recorded the assault.

Through his lawyers, DD has repeatedly insisted that the civil claims against him are baseless, calling several of them “sickening allegations” made by “people looking for a quick payday.”

He has also pleaded not guilty to criminal charges and is currently being held in a Brooklyn jail after twice being denied bail. His lawyer, Mark Agnifilo, said the rapper was “going to fight this with all his might and all his might” and argued during the court hearing that the so-called freak-offs — marathon sex productions that prosecutors say involved hired sex workers and women Combs and others Sexual acts were forced into gratification—consensual, if unconventional. “Is this sex trafficking?” he asked in court last week. “No, not if everyone wants to be there.”

With so many players, civil and criminal cases, and a lot of misinformation floating around, we’re pulling together some frequently asked questions about Diddy and trying to answer them — the best we can, of course, with what we know.

For a more detailed history of all the allegations against DD, see Anna’s full explainer here.

    What is Combs accused of?

Combs is facing two types of lawsuits: a criminal case brought by the federal government and several civil suits brought by individuals, each with different allegations.

Combs was arrested on criminal charges; The government alleges that he used his business ventures to conduct criminal activities, including sex trafficking and kidnapping, and then used his power to intimidate victims and cover up the crimes.

The case centered on alleged performances with women and sex workers. The complaint alleges that DD often brought sex workers to perform in sessions and taped encounters to coerce silence from participants, using an array of employees and his business organization to facilitate criminal activity. For all this, they charged Combs with conspiracy: A powerful charge It was originally used to prosecute leaders of organized crime and could result in a heavy sentence.

But it was the civil cases that opened the floodgates that ultimately led to the indictment.

In November 2023, Combs’ ex-girlfriend, Cassandra Ventura, also known as singer Cassie, filed the first explosive lawsuit that revealed several allegations against Combs to the public, including that the rapper organized performances with sex workers and forced her to participate. Although he filed a civil suit (which Combs settled within a day), Ventura’s allegations appear to be central to the federal criminal case against Combs.

Four more lawsuits followed, three by women who alleged he raped them (in some cases drugging them), and one by a male music producer who accused DD of grooming her and forcing her to hire sex workers.

If so many people are involved, why did it take so long to come out?

Combs was incredibly powerful in the music industry and in American culture more generally. He was one of the first to blend the worlds of hip-hop, business and luxury. His fashion label, Sean John, founded in 1998, became Known for high-end menswear. He promotes vodka and tequila brands and hosts exclusives white team in the Hamptons with guests like Martha Stewart, Sarah Jessica Parker, Matthew Broderick and Jay Z.

It’s hard for people to talk about sexual harassment in any situation, and doubly hard when the alleged perpetrator is a rich and well-connected person who can influence their careers. Combs is also accused Running a huge criminal “enterprise”. That left women with blackmail and threats of violence — including threatening victims with firearms — all of which would have made it harder for anyone to come forward.

What is on the tape mentioned in the complaint? Will they ever come out?

Several of the accused, and the criminal charges, allege that DD videotaped sexual assaults and performances with sex workers. The accused alleged this week that a tape was made of her sexually assaulting him was sold And seen by other men.

Typically, accusers say any tapes serve as a way to ensure their silence. In court, the New York Times reported, prosecutors presented A statement from one Who said, “He only threatened me about my sex tapes which he has on two phones. He said he would expose me, remember these sex tapes where I’m heavily drugged.

Why is everyone talking about baby oil? Is it real?

One of the strangest details Comb complaints Authorities say they seized “more than a thousand bottles of baby oil and lubricant.” Search for Mughal residences in Miami and Los Angeles earlier this year. Prosecutors said the oil was for performance and so was Ventura said in his case that he was asked to pour “excessive” amounts of oil on himself at these events.

Possession of baby oil is not a crime, and the whole oil thing doesn’t matter much in light of the violent and disturbing behavior Combs has been accused of. But a federal indictment of a public figure like Combs is meant to be read, and it’s not unusual for prosecutors to include details they know will shock people and to headline. Baby oil did the trick.

What other celebrities are connected to the case?

It’s important to note that no other people, celebrity or not, have been charged along with Combs in the criminal case. The civil suit also does not name any other celebrities, only Combs and those occasionally employed by him are accused.

That said, it’s an incredibly difficult question, prone to spreading more rumor and innuendo than uncovering any truth, as viewers try to determine who knew what when. Indeed, Combs had many friends in high places. But following the question gives rise to incorrect information, such as a Viral song about “A DD Party”. Justin Bieber has been blamed for what experts now say was likely created by AI.

So far, a few bold faces have been on Combs’ celeb-packed “guest list.”white teamthere is They come forward to say Combs was in no way connected to any of the crimes charged. But it’s best if we all put the conspiracy theories to rest and let the case play out in court. Wild speculation is only liable to add to the suffering of the victims.

What will happen to Combs’ business and brand now?

In the weeks before Ventura’s case came to light last November, Dee Dee took several media grabs, including donating $1 million to Howard University, showing off and collecting a Global Icon Award at the VMAs, and throwing himself a high-profile birthday party in London. With Naomi Campbell and Idris Elba among the guests.

Since then, many things have crumbled, not least his business empire. Diageo, the beverage brand with which Combs once partnered on vodka and tequila, quickly removed his image from the website and the partnership was dissolved. Settle a case This January is another matter. Capital Preparatory School, a New York charter school network Coombs helped expand, posted a statement on the school’s website last fall saying it was severing ties with him (though the statement was later removed). Combs also stepped down as chair of Rebellion, a TV network he helped start in 2013 and then officially sell his bet This summer and according to Sean John’s website, The Daily Beast, was taken down.

According to New York MagazineHe no longer has a dedicated “Sean Diddy Combs Day” in Miami, returned his keys to New York City and put his planned Hulu show on ice.

As for Howard, his alma mater? It returned gifts of millions of dollars.

If Diddy sentenced, how long can stay in jail?

There is no guarantee that Combs’ case will go to trial or that he will be convicted if he does, so it is impossible to predict the outcome at this point. But the Judiciary has issued one List of Complaints What that could mean against Combs and everyone else if he is convicted. Unsurprisingly, the maximum sentence range carries a possible 10-year sentence with one transportation for the purpose of prostitution, and that racketeering conspiracy charge means Combs could face up to life in prison.
